Information for Physicians

Pharmacogenomics deals with variability of a drug response due to genetic variations with most attention paid to genetic variations that identify individual’s susceptibility to toxicity. With the incidence of adverse drug reactions (ADRs) in US hospitals of about 7% (over 2M cases) and incidence of fatal ADRs of 0.3% (over 100K cases), the primary goal of pharmacogenomics is to predict and prevent ADRs and then to personalize an individual’s therapy. After all, the first principle of medicine is “first, do not harm” (Hippocrates 460-377 BC).
